International Accounting Day

International Accounting Day 2017 Factfile

International Accounting Day falls on November 10th and is celebrated by accountants across the globe. It’s also referred to as International Accountants’ Day!

Accounting might be viewed by outsiders as a “boring”, profession, but there are actually some particularly interesting facts surrounding the profession itself and we’re here to dispel that myth! While it celebrates an event from 1494, the day is actually a somewhat recent addition to modern calendars considering how far back it dates.

We’ve collated some of these facts for you to have a look through, because everyone likes an industry infographic, right?

1. 70% of accountants love their job!

For example, did you know that 70% of accountants actually love their profession and wouldn’t change it, even if they could go back in time? This sheds a great light on the industry – Accountants love what they do and their passion is in their work!

2. An accountant invented bubblegum.

In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum while working as an accountant at Fleer, the gum-making company. However, he didn’t patent his invention so didn’t reap all the rewards from it that he could have! What a sticky situation to end up in.

3. International Accounting Day marks the anniversary of the publication of the first book which provided a detailed description of double-entry bookkeeping.

Witten by Luca Pacioli (aka the “Founding Father of Accounting”), publisher Paganino Paganini released the first print editions on November 10th 1494 titled Summa de Arithmetica, Geometrica, Proportioni et Proportionalita. Bit of a mouthful! It translates to Summary of Arithmetic, Geometry, Proportions and Proportionality.

4. The number of jobs in the field are increasing!

While accounting is not necessarily any easier to get into, there are more positions available – at least in the United States, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

John Grisham, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant and Janet Jackson all studied accountancy! However, John Grisham is the only one who ended up with a degree. Other famous figures who studied accounting include MMA/UFC Fighter Chuck Liddell, musician Kenny G and comedian Eddie Izzard, who has been described as “wildly unsuccessful” after failing all his exams and not being able to persuade his university to let him retake them.

6. The FBI employs accountants!

The FBI employs more than 2000 accounting professionals, who use their maths and analytics skills to solve crimes.
